The air seemed to hum with an expectant silence as if the building itself was bracing for an oncoming storm. I stood in the nurses' station, the clock on the wall marking time with a soft, persistent tick.  It was 9 PM. The usual hustle of the evening shift was absent, replaced by an eerie calm.
